Response to a Record Number of House Fires
Since December 1st, our trained Disaster Team has responded to 8 residential fires which is high for such a short period of time. A total of 9 families living in single family homes, 1 mobile home, and 1 duplex were affected. Almost every home was destroyed or received major damage. Our Team provided for the disaster clients’ immediate emergency needs of shelter, clothes, food, medical necessities and mental well-being.

Among those receiving Red Cross disaster assistance was a family with a love one serving overseas. Unaware of what his family was going through back home, the family wanted to quickly personally notify him of the incident including the loss of his pet in the fire. Our Red Cross Disaster Team worked in conjunction with our Military Family Caseworkers in collecting accurate and timely information. Caseworkers then sent an emergency message to the serviceman’s commander requesting the serviceman contact his family directly as soon as possible.
Recently Disaster Team representatives did a presentation to the St. Croix County and Washington County Fire Chiefs’ Associations. The presentation covered the role of Red Cross in local disaster relief, especially house fires. In addition Fire Chiefs were educated about support services available to the firefighters while battling blazes. IN addition to support relief to families, we can provide food and beverage to firefighters in the field to support their nutritional and dehydration needs.
